Working in Clients’ First Languages

Therapists, social workers, and other human services professionals will tell you that every person and every case is different.
A client’s needs will differ based on various factors – their past experiences, their family and close relationships, their physical and mental health background, and their job and financial situation. The list goes on.
For those working with 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗴𝗲𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘆𝗹𝘂𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀, the situation becomes even more complex.
Many refugees have experienced trauma, both in their home country where they faced persecution and during their time in exile and on their journey to Australia.
Once they arrive, their difficulties are far from over. Many refugees struggle to receive a visa, benefits, and adequate financial assistance – all while adjusting to the culture and language of a brand new country.
Those who work directly with refugees and asylum seekers work with a very vulnerable group of people in a system that wasn’t built to handle the complexity of their situations.
At Bower Place, we take a trauma-informed approach and give clients the opportunity to work in their native language directly with practitioners, so that we can understand their background and needs.
