Holidays, Family, and Fracture

< All Topics
As the holidays draw closer and closer, some look forward to getting together with their families, while others may be dreading it or perhaps deciding not to participate altogether.
There’s always an expectation for family togetherness on Christmas, which can make the holidays a painful reminder of family disagreements, tension, or fractures. But in 2021 in particular, we’re seeing a growing division in many families due to the issue of vaccination.
For some families, this split over whether to vaccinate or not and what that means for family get-togethers is unprecedented. Families are experiencing an amount of conflict that they otherwise wouldn’t due to the strength of opinion surrounding the topic of vaccinations.
But for others, this disagreement only highlights other fractures and tension that already existed within the family under the surface.
Some individuals may find themselves at a turning point – unable to reconcile over this particular issue, while also finally recognising preexisting discord in their family relationships had been overlooked.
They may make the decision not to continue relationships with certain family members, or it may be an opportunity to address emotions and patterns that were previously swept under the rug.
