How Can We Help?
Emotional Dysregulation
Outbursts, tantrums, and mood swings are all a regular part of parenting. However, if they occur frequently, even in response to mild events, they might also be signs of 𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗱𝘆𝘀𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Practitioners working with families sometimes come into contact with children or adolescents experiencing emotional dysregulation – the inability to control one’s emotions that is often characterized by extreme responses to negative emotions.
Because a child with emotional dysregulation has emotional responses that are often extreme or disproportionate to the situation at hand, it can be difficult to know how to help them. Normal methods seem to fail, and parents may feel at a loss.
At Bower Place, we work with families to help emotionally dysregulated children take ownership over their emotions and behaviour. We know that parents or authority figures can’t step in and do the work for them. We use a systemic approach to help children learn to regulate their emotions and gain control over their reactions.
