We often hear a lot about the negative impact of stress and anxiety on our health – both physical and mental.

But itโ€™s a misconception that all forms of stress and worry are damaging.

When youโ€™re feeling concerned, worried, or stressed, itโ€™s not always a problem that needs to be fixed. In fact, thereโ€™s a big difference between simple worry and anxiety.

Worrying and acute stress can actually serve a functional purpose by spurring you on to action or by helping you problem solve, but anxiety can paralyse you and impact your everyday life.

So how do you tell the difference between ๐˜„๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ฟ๐˜† and ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜…๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜†?

1. Anxiety presents more physical symptoms, so check for increased tension in the body, heart pounding, lightheadedness, or a change in breathing.

2. Worry is temporary, but anxiety sticks around.

3. Worry is connected to specific events like a big presentation at work, whereas anxiety is more general. You can be anxious no matter whatโ€™s going on in your life.

4. Worry also doesn’t impact your ability to function in the world, but anxiety can make day-to-day life a lot more difficult.
