Last week’s introduction to The 2026 Skills Horizon, research from Sydney Executive Plus at the University of Sydney Business School, explored the authors’ description of the current period as a “decade of disorientation.”
The research identifies five significant shifts affecting the environment in which leaders operate: values, technology, accountability, trust and energy.
Each has clear relevance for educational leaders across Australia.
Values are shifting, with principals navigating different expectations from students, families, staff and communities around inclusion, behaviour, wellbeing and responsibility.
Technology is shifting, particularly as AI changes teaching, assessment, communication and access to information.
Accountability is shifting. Leaders are increasingly required to demonstrate not only what decisions were made, but how and why they were reached.
Trust is shifting, increasing the importance of transparency, consistency and clear communication.
Energy is shifting, influencing sustainability, resources, infrastructure and the environments in which schools operate.
Importantly, these shifts do not occur separately. They intersect within the everyday work of school leadership, adding another layer to the complexity principals are required to navigate.
Policies remain essential, but they will not always provide the complete answer when responsibilities, perspectives and risks collide.
This is where clear protocols can support leaders by providing frameworks around responsibility, authority, boundaries, consultation and next steps.
