Course Description
Complex Clients & Families: Bower(method)
The Bower Place short course, Complex Clients and Families: Bower(method), is a 10 week course offered by Bower Place designed to link family and systemic therapy theory to practice. Ten weeks of theoretical knowledge is accompanied by ten live client/family sessions each week in the Bower Place Complex Needs Clinic. These are accessible online to remote students via our secure network.
Theoretical topics are focussed around key concepts of family therapy and systematic practice. This theoretical content is applied to practical work simultaneously through weekly observations of live client/family sessions. Both knowledge and training is referenced to our integrative family and systemic therapy model, Bower(method), and our protocols for practice, Bower(note).
On completion of this Course, students should be able to:
- Identify the key concepts of a systemic approach to family therapy.
- Consider the relationship between a systemic approach and the personal relationships and moral difficulties experienced by clients.
- Consider the way in which a systemic approach can be applied to individuals, couples, families, and wider systems.
- Consider the application of family therapy and systemic practice theory to a range of presenting difficulties and family arrangements.
- Understand how Bower(method) and Bower(note) may be applied to their clinical practice.
Course Overview
Theory: Introduction to Key Concepts in Family Therapy
Over 10 weeks, students are introduced to the key theoretical concepts underpinning systemic family therapy. They are also introduced to an integrative model of family therapy and systemic practice – Bower(method) – and its accompanying protocols for practice, Bower(note). This knowledge is acquired through weekly PowerPoint recordings, with understanding assessed by a short quiz. A range of additional readings can be found under Course Materials – Additional Readings. These are not compulsory but can add to your understanding of the topics presented. Quiz responses are due weekly on Sunday nights by 5pm.
This theoretical component is conducted online providing maximum flexibility and designed to run in tandem with live weekly online clinical sessions.
Delivery: Online = 20 hours
Practice: Observation of Clinical Practice
Students are introduced to the Bower Place Complex Needs Clinic (BP-CNC) as observers where they begin to understand the practical application of the theoretical concepts being addressed. They are inducted into the processes and procedures of the Clinic and team, including Bower(method) and Bower(note), and actively participate in pre and post session discussions which link theory to practice. More specifically, client sessions are designed to demonstrate the practical application of Bower(method) and Bower(note) and cover a range of different clinical presentations and client groups (e.g. individuals, couples, families).
Delivery: Online or face-to-face = 20 hours.
SUMMARY OF WEEKLY REQUIREMENTS:
- Attendance at weekly briefing and de-briefing and live client sessions.
- Review the weekly topic PowerPoint and complete the associated quiz weekly by Sunday night at 5pm. A range of additional readings are provided under Course Materials – Additional Readings. These cover topics related to Family Therapy and Systemic Practice and the PowerPoint presentations but are not compulsory.
- Enjoy your journey into family and systemic therapy with us! 🙂
