The 2026 Skills Horizon, research from Sydney Executive Plus, identifies 35 leadership skills grouped into four interconnected capability areas, referred to as “Blobs”.
The term reflects how leadership capabilities overlap, interact and evolve rather than exist as isolated skills.
These four areas have particular relevance for educational leaders.
Speaking the language of technology highlights the importance of understanding emerging technologies, recognising risks and making informed decisions.
Solving problems of scale recognises how a complexity involving one student can quickly involve multiple stakeholders, consuming significant leadership time and resources. Effective processes are essential to ensure individual situations do not compromise broader school responsibilities.
Working across difference emphasises collaboration between students, families, staff and external professionals while maintaining clear responsibilities and professional boundaries.
Thinking through complexity acknowledges the competing expectations, risks and responsibilities principals routinely navigate.
Together, these capabilities reinforce the importance of clear protocols and consistent practices.
Well-established protocols support efficient, informed decision-making by clarifying authority, responsibilities, boundaries and consultation processes.
While future educational challenges cannot always be anticipated, schools can establish structures that strengthen leadership capability and support the wellbeing of their entire communities.
Next week’s concluding article will explore the research’s concept of the Grounded Leader.
