From Embracing Technology to Limiting it

Twenty years ago, school leaders were asking: How do we get more technology into classrooms? Today, increasingly, they are being asked: How do we manage and limit it?

Chris Ramsden’s article, Beyond the 15-Minute Headline, reflecting on changing screen-time expectations in NSW schools, highlights a much broader challenge facing educational leaders.

Across Australia, principals operate within different state, territory and sector requirements. As governments and education authorities respond to emerging research, technology and community expectations, school leaders must interpret new directions, determine what they mean in practice, communicate them to staff and families, and implement them within their communities.

It is quite a shift.

Schools once invested significant time, resources and professional learning into  embedding technology in teaching and learning. Now leaders are increasingly considering when it should be used, how much is appropriate and where boundaries should sit.

The leadership question is: How can principals navigate yet another changing complexity without making it up as they go?

Clear protocols can help by establishing responsibility, authority, decision-making processes and communication pathways.

Technology will change. Expectations will change. Complexity will remain.

But with clear protocols, training and support, leaders can respond with greater confidence and consistency while keeping their focus where it belongs: leading people and supporting young people to learn, grow and thrive.
