The recent bower(schools) National Sharing Conference provided a valuable opportunity for educators to come together for a day of practical insights, open conversations and a shared commitment to inclusion.
Across the program, presenters shared real experiences from schools, exploring interagency collaboration, educator wellbeing, professional boundaries, authority and responsibility, complex meetings, complaints, enrolment processes and the effective management of inequality.
A key theme was the importance of clear boundaries around roles, authority and responsibility. Effective practice requires a strong understanding of individual and organisational responsibilities, as well as clarity about where authority begins and ends.
Discussions throughout the day highlighted how schools across different contexts are navigating many of the same challenges. Complex behaviour, difficult conversations with families, complaints, risk management and appropriate information sharing all requiring professionalism, collaboration and sound processes.
The conference reinforced that professionalism is not simply about having the right answers. It is reflected in clear communication, thoughtful decision-making, reflection and a willingness to continually improve practice.
Underpinning every discussion was inclusion, ensuring students, families and communities have meaningful opportunities to participate, be heard, understood and supported. Inclusion is not an additional task; it is central to effective practice and decision-making.
The strength of the conference was its practical focus. By sharing experiences, policy developments, protocols and approaches that can be applied in schools, presenters demonstrated the value of learning from one another, strengthening professional practice and keeping inclusion at the heart of education.
